Famed for its traditional architecture, cosy chalets and friendly atmosphere, La Joue du Loup is often referred to as 'the wooden resort'. Built in 1976 at an altitude of 1,500m, this resort is beautiful and charming. With a thriving community and plenty of shops, restaurants and activities for every taste, the resort of La Joue de Loup has something for everyone.
The resort is located in the Dévoluy region of the Southern Alps. The picturesque village and beautiful surroundings are complemented by plenty of activities to keep you busy, and the resort is well-placed to allow you to visit other resorts, such as the futuristic Super Dévoluy. In the summer the weather is often cloudless with plenty of sun, and the pure air of the mountains is sure to give you a summer escape with a difference. Things to do
Picture perfect panoramas
La Joue du Loup has plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy in the summer. The warm weather and refreshing mountain air makes this the perfect place for leisurely walks or more intense hikes. Take a cable car up to higher altitudes and walk back down the mountain. Be sure to take your camera and snap the breath-taking panoramic views of the Southern Alps. Head up the Pic du Bure for views of the Écrins and Vercors massifs. There are also some fantastic cycling routes available in this area, and many visitors hire a mountain bike to make the most of these trails. The Tourist Office puts on competitions, so why not show off your skills in the VTT competition through the mountains? If you are looking for something more adrenaline-fuelled there's abseiling or even paragliding to try. And there's also rock climbing, canoeing, horse riding, helicopter tours and much more on offer to keep you busy in the beautiful outdoor scenery of La Joue du Loup.
There are plenty of indoor activities to be enjoyed in this area too. The resort boasts a fabulous sports centre where you can try zumba, mini golf, football and many other sports. Home to an indoor climbing wall and a swimming pool, there's something for everyone. If you fancy some relaxation, a trip to the sauna is the perfect way to unwind. Or head over to Aquaspa Dévoluy for peace and comfort. With a spa, massage facilities and a sauna, the qualified staff will make sure you embrace the relaxation of the Alps. If you prefer to spend a fun evening inside, why not visit the cinema or make the most of the resort's bowling facilities. For a chance to take in some more culture, take a trip to the village of Saint-Disdier to visit the historic Mère-Eglise Church. With guided tours available, this is the perfect trip to soak up some architectural beauty. The chapel is one of the oldest in the Hautes-Alpes and is perfect for culture vultures.
Visit a friendly farm
There's plenty on offer to keep the children busy in La Joue du Loup. From outdoor playgrounds, swimming pools and football courts to evening activities, there will never be a shortage of things to do. The Tourist Office organises evening activities, including clown and magic shows or Chinese lantern shows to entertain the children, which are hugely popular. There's also the opportunity for families to meet the local farmers. Feed the lambs, meet the herds and find out all about caring for the animals with one of the farmers on hand to lead you around the farm. There is also an outdoor woodland rope adventure course and crazy golf, so there will never be a dull moment.
If you fancy getting off the mountain for a day, why not visit Valence? Famed for embodying Southern French culture, this city is a beautiful mix of traditional culture and modern amenities. Visit the Saint Apollinaris Cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of Valence, and take in the beautiful Roman architecture. For something more unusual, explore the Jean Perdrix Park, which is home to two 'water castles', both stunning structures, ideal for architecture lovers.
Eating and Drinking
La Joue du Loup is home to plenty of family run restaurants and fabulous cuisine. From traditional French food to more relaxed pizzerias, there's something for every taste. Particularly popular for its gourmet food and large wine selection is L'Etoile. Boasting fantastic fondue and gourmet grilled dishes, this is the place to go for delicious cuisine. La P'tite Bouffe is another restaurant offering traditional food. With a charming interior, friendly atmosphere and serving local dishes and produce, this will give you a taste of life in the Southern Alps. For a more relaxed feel, head to La Casita. Serving hamburgers, sandwiches and other snack foods, this is perfect for familiar good value food. With over 20 restaurants to choose from, wander around the resort and see what takes your fancy.
Peppered rum for partying
The resort is also home to a thriving nightlife and no one will be left without plans for the evening. Bowling Le Chourum, Nature Pass été is perfect for an evening socialising with friends. With four neon lit bowling alleys, billiards and TVs there's plenty for you to do. If you're feeling more adventurous why not take on their mechanical rodeo bull? With a great selection of drinks and cocktails you're sure to enjoy your night here. If you're after a longer night, head over to Pub et discothèque La Fournaise. The pub is open from 5pm whilst the club opens from 10.30pm and remains open until 6.30 am. Party the night away with their peppered rum and flavoured shooters. With music of all genres and an excellent DJ, everyone will be kept entertained until the early hours.
Lift passes can be bought in the resort itself. Ski lift passes are only available in the ski season from December to April but a pedestrian lift pass is available for only Eu8.40 so you can take a chair lift across the resort. There are special group discounts for those purchasing lift passes for groups of over 20 people.
Childcare and Family Facilities
La Joue du Loup has been awarded the "Family Plus Mountain" label. This is a national label which guarantees high quality family facilities in French tourist resorts. With this in mind, the resort has plenty to accommodate all families. There are nurseries for children of all ages and needs, and qualified staff will keep your children busy all day so you can enjoy some time alone. Garderie Les P'tits Loups will care for children from 15 months up to six years and offer a wide range of activities but places are limited so remember to book in advance. For family accommodation, there is a range of family rooms available in the hotels and you can also borrow cribs and prams on site to save you travelling with them.
The resort has plenty of outdoor parking spaces that are free of charge. The spaces are close to the restaurants, shops and facilities for your ease, meaning you won't have far to travel with bags. There is also a covered car park which requires payment to park. Located in the centre, it's close to all amenities and the first hour of parking is free, with the car park under video surveillance to ensure the safety of your vehicle. With over 300 parking spaces, including disabled spaces, this carpark is available all year round.
