Welcome to the top of the world! Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe. Its perch at 2,300m gives it a very long ski season November to May generally and a superlative location. Looking down from the top of the Belleville Valley, Val Thorens is purpose built, but not unattractive, and is growing increasingly sophisticated, helped, no doubt, by access to the 3 Valleys area, the largest, and one of the best, in the world. That means a huge range of skiing, with a particular strength in snowboarding, at a resort that is very popular with young people and families. Val Thorens is in the Tarentaise Valley, in Savoie, in south-east France.
Val Thorens was started in 1971, so it has plenty of modern architecture. However, the worst excesses of 1970s design have been toned down and many old apartment blocks are now clad in traditional materials to make the resort much prettier these days. It's aimed a families above all, so there's plenty for children. It's a very busy and diverse place if you want a burger, you can have a burger, if you want Michelin-starred dining you can have that too. Young people enjoy the huge range of skiing and boarding available without paying the mega-rich prices of other 3 Valleys resorts like Courchevel.
